2011 Essay Prize Winner, Joe Paolelli and Fr. Ken
The Institute acknowledged the winner of the first Kenneth C. Simpson Essay Prize last May. Senior, Joseph Paolelli, was given his award by Fr. Ken Simpson, for whom the prize is named. We eagerly anticipate several entries for the award this year.
Part of the Sheil Catholic Center’s Christ the Teacher Institute , the Kenneth C. Simpson Essay Prize is awarded to the student in any discipline who writes the best essay on the influence or foundations of Catholic thought in that discipline. The winning essay will be presented in a public lecture on Northwestern University’s campus, as well as be bound and kept in the Sheil Library. This $1,000 prize is named after the Fr. Kenneth C. Simpson, the third director/chaplain of the Sheil Catholic Center. His vision of a Catholic Scholars program, which would be integrated into the NU curriculum, gave birth to Christ the Teacher.

Description
The Kenneth C. Simpson Essay Prize is designed to promote serious thought and reflection about the foundations and/or influence of Catholic thought in every field of study.
Students who enter their essays will have done serious research into the ways in which Catholic theology, philosophy and imagination have stimulated intellectual discourse — and, in many cases, furthered the development of a field.
Essays may deal with the influence of a particular Catholic individual, a line of thought or inquiry, or the intersection of Catholic thought or imagination and the exploration of the unknown.
Essay Prize Rules and Deadline
The deadline for submission in this year's competition is May 1, 2012. The prize winner will be announced on May 16. The public lecture will take place on Tuesday, May 31 at a time and place to be determined.
