Sheil Seminars

Tim Higgins teaching his CORE class on Social Justice

Each quarter as part of the Christ the Teacher Institute, the Sheil Catholic Center offers Sheil Seminars on a variety of topics

Sheil Seminars are academic and provocative courses taught by Sheil staff and occasional guest scholars. Unless otherwise designated, seminars are open to students, associates and the wider Sheil and Northwestern communities who want concise, challenging presentations and discussions on various aspects of Catholic teaching.

In 2011new Sheil Seminars were added to the CORE curriculum and now feature several guest presenters drawn from faculty at Northwestern, Loyola, and the University of Chicago. Interest remains high for the 4 and 5 week seminars which now boast course numbers, and a yearly catalogue with descriptions.

The Institute is looking forward to two speakers in 2012. Bishop Joseph Perry will address students and the public about the cause for canonization for Fr. Augustus Toltan during Black History Month and the president of New York University, John Sexton, will arrive in the spring to talk about the intersection of intellectual inquiry and the life of faith. NU President Morton Schapiro will respond.

Classes are 60 to 120 minutes in length and taught from three to six weeks during the quarter. In addition, four core seminars designed for Catholic Scholars consist of five 2-hour sessions.

Each quarter, seminar topics will be selected from two or more of the following disciplines, which include:

  • Sacred Scripture
  • Theology and Christology
  • Ecclesiology and Church History
  • Morality and Social Justice
  • Liturgy, Prayer and Spirituality
  • Catholic Culture & Imagination
  • Human Person

Most seminars will take place in the new Sheil classroom, which is equipped with smart technology and provides space for presentations and discussion. Alternate spaces may include Sheil’s lower level or a Northwestern University classroom.

While these courses do not yet provide NU academic credits, they are designed and taught to the standards of academic excellence expected of a typical undergraduate course. Each session builds on previous material; and participants will be asked to do reading and offer evaluations.

The cost of the each seminar is free for students; $5 for NU Faculty/Staff and Registered Sheil Associates; and $25 for all others.
