Christians are encouraged to read scripture for nourishment, strength and an understanding of the ways in which God interacts with human beings. For Catholics, Bible study also means looking at both the literary and spiritual interpretations of the Old anzd New Testaments.
At the Sheil Catholic Center, we have two Bible studies held by Fr. John Kartje and Dr. Mary Deeley, our two scripture scholars on staff. Both groups tackle individual books or themes and explore context, content, theology and spirituality (as well as Hebrew and Greek, for fun).
Bible Underground meets weekly with Fr. John and is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Fr. John’s blog, bibleunderground.blogspot.com, keeps you up-to-date with readings. Bible Underground is held on Tuesdays at 7pm in the Scholar’s Room at Norris.
Bible Explorers meets weekly with Mary Deeley and is open to all. For the fall quarter, it is held on Thursdays at 7pm in Conference Room 2 at Sheil. The winter quarter schedule is not yet available.
For more information on either Bible study, please contact Mary Deeley, Pastoral Associate, at (847) 328-4648 or m-deeley@northwestern.edu.
